• Acupuncture

Acupuncture is part of an integrated system of primary health care, known as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), which is believed to have originated in China at least two thousand years ago. Acupuncture focuses as much on the prevention of illness as on the treatment. The father of Chinese Medicine, Shen Nung, theorised that the body had an energy force running throughout it, known as Qi. The Qi consists of all essential life activities, including the spiritual, emotional, mental and physical aspects of life, therefore to influence the Qi energy is to influence the physiological functioning of the body. Qi travels throughout the body along "Meridians" or special pathways. Acupuncture treatment involves the insertion of fine, sterile needles into these specific sites (acupuncture points), along the body's meridians to clear energy blockages and encourage the normal flow of qi through the individual. Acupuncture points are specific locations where the Meridians come to the surface of the skin, and are easily accessible by "needling", therefore influencing the physiological functioning of the body. There are many diseases that can be treated successfully by Acupuncture. The most common ailments include back and neck problems, Cervical Spondylosis, Condylitis, Arthritic conditions, Headaches of all kinds (including migraine), Allergic reactions, general and specific use for Analgesia and the relief of muscle spasms. There have also been clinical trials in the use of Acupuncture in treating anxiety disorders and depression.

  • Allergy Testing

Our GP's provide the RAST (radioallergysorbent test) method of allergy testing which involves the taking of blood to identify what is causing your allergic reaction. A RAST test is primarily used to test for food allergies and other very common allergens. A pathology lab will expose your blood sample to different allergens such as grasses, mites or insects. Treatment may include allergy shots or allergy desensitisation, which involves injections of small amounts of the triggering allergen. Your body will react to the introduced allergen by building up immunity to it.

  • Bowen Technique

Bowen is a very gentle form of natural healing. A Bowen treatment involves light moves applied to specific areas of the body across muscles, tendons, and ligaments. It normalises and relaxes muscles and the nervous system which encourages the body to begin the healing process. There is no forceful manipulation. There are significant pauses between each move for the body to process and allow integration. The purpose is to retrain the body to work, so it can regain its innate ability to heal. The moves can be done over light clothing and it is a wonderful treatment for sensitive people and marvellous with children! Bowen is used in acute as well as chronic conditions. It is also excellent to maintain optimal body function as a preventive treatment to promote wellness and prevent wellness.

  • Chiropractic

The World Federation of Chiropractic define Chiropractic as "A health profession concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system and general health". There is an emphasis on manual treatments including spinal adjustment and soft tissue manipulation. Modern chiropractic was founded by Daniel David Palmer, a grocer, who performed his first chiropractic adjustment in 1895. It is based on the concept that the nervous system coordinates all of the body's functions, and that disease results from a lack of normal nerve function. Chiropractic employs manipulation and adjustment of body structures, such as the spinal column, so that pressure on nerves coming from the spinal cord due to displacement (subluxation) of a vertebral body may be relieved.

Practitioners believe that misalignment and nerve pressure can cause problems not only in the local area, but also at some distance from it. Chiropractic treatment is effective for muscle spasms of the back and neck, tension headaches, and referred pain to other parts of the body.

  • Far Infrared Sauna

Stress relief Just a few minutes in the gentle rays of the infrared sauna provides you with an overall massaging effect, soothing tangled nerves and knotted muscles. Detoxification Conventional saunas require high air temperatures to pull impurities from the body but infrared saunas can penetrate directly up to 50mm inside the body. Impurities are pushed out using lower and more comfortable temperatures. As the body temperature rises by infrared heat perspiration occurs and blood circulation increases. The muscles and organs are stimulated and toxic waste (fat, heavy metals, lactic acid, urea cholesterol and other environmental chemicals) is removed from your body through perspiration. The cells and body in general is able to function better in a cleaner environment. Pain relief In Europe and Japan the far infrared therapy has been effective in providing pain relief with those suffering from bursitis, fibro myalgia, rheumatoid arthritis, back pain, headaches, sprains and many other muscular-skeletal ailments. In one Swedish study a 70 year old man with rheumatoid arthritis had reached his toxic limit of gold corticosteroid injections and his Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR) was still 125. After using an infrared system for less than 5 months his ESR was down to 11. Weight control and cellulite reduction A moderately conditioned person can easily sweat off 500 grams of sweat in a sauna- the equivilent of running 6-8 kilometres or up to 900 calories. While the weight of the water lost can be regained by rehydration with water, the calories will not be. Cellulite is cleared more quickly and comfortably than with other saunas as the infra red rays penetrate more deeply to bring out the toxic material more readily and to facilitate drainage from the area. Cardiovascular conditioning A 2001 study reported in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology concluded that repeated infrared saunas treatment improves impaired blood vessel functions in patients with high blood pressure, diabetes, smoking and high cholesterol. It also reported significant weight loss, lowered blood pressure, lowered blood sugars. Immune system stimulation Increased activity of T cells, NK cells and B cells which are used by the body to fight, neutralise and destroy disease producing foreign invaders, such as viruses, toxins, bacterium and mutated cells.

  • Flower Remedies

These are remedies that are made from infusing the energy (vibrational) pattern of specific flowers into spring water. Each type of essence has a specific imprint that works within our energy fields to loosen energy blockages and rebalance specific mental or emotional patterns. These emotional patterns can eventually manifest on a physical level as ailments or illness. Once the stored blocks and negativity are removed, enhanced physical, mental and emotional wellbeing occurs. Vibrational essences are safe and gentle to use, and have no side effects. They are taken by placing a few drops under the tongue or in a glass of water to be sipped at regular intervals. A small amount of brandy is usually used as a preservative to prevent bacterial growth, but other preservatives can be used for those sensitive to alcohol. There are many different vibrational remedies available, but amongst the most frequently used are Bach Flower Essences and Australian Bush Flower Essences.

  • Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy is a psychological therapy and can be very effective in treating many problems and conditions. Unlike many other therapies, hypnotherapy aims to enable a person to overcome their problem in a relatively short space of time. In some cases, a client may just require a few sessions. Hypnotherapy is distinctive from other forms of psychological therapy as it addresses the subconscious mind in order to encourage beneficial change; consequently the root cause of a problem is treated. During hypnosis your subconscious mind becomes very aware and susceptible to beneficial change. I will use a number of techniques in order to encourage therapeutic change so that you can achieve your desired goals. After hypnosis, we will discuss any experiences that you have had during the session. In therapy, hypnosis usually involves the person experiencing a sense of deep relaxation with their attention narrowed down, and focused on appropriate suggestions made by the therapist. These suggestions help people make positive changes within themselves. Long gone are the days when hypnosis was seen as waving watches and controlling people's minds. In a hypnotherapy session you are always in control and you are not made to do anything. It is generally accepted that all hypnosis is ultimately self-hypnosis. A hypnotist merely helps to facilitate your experience - hypnotherapy is not about being made to do things, in fact it is the opposite, it is about empowerment Definition of hypnotherapy Contrary to popular belief, hypnosis is not a state of deep sleep. It does involve the induction of a trance-like condition, but when in it, the patient is actually in an enhanced state of awareness, concentrating entirely on the hypnotist's voice. In this state, the conscious mind is suppressed and the subconscious mind is revealed. The therapist is able to suggest ideas, concepts and lifestyle adaptations to the patient, the seeds of which become firmly planted. The practice of promoting healing or positive development in any way is known as hypnotherapy. Hypnotherapy aims to re-programme patterns of behaviour within the mind, enabling irrational fears, phobias, negative thoughts and suppressed emotions to be overcome. As the body is released from conscious control during the relaxed trance-like state of hypnosis, breathing becomes slower and deeper, the pulse rate drops and the metabolic rate falls. Similar changes along nervous pathways and hormonal channels enable the sensation of pain to become less acute, and the awareness of unpleasant symptoms, such as nausea or indigestion, to be alleviated. How does it work? Hypnosis is thought to work by altering our state of consciousness in such a way that the analytical left-hand side of the brain is turned off, while the non-analytical right-hand side is made more alert. The conscious control of the mind is inhibited, and the subconscious mind awoken. Since the subconscious mind is a deeper-seated, more instinctive force than the conscious mind, this is the part which has to change for the patient's behaviour and physical state to alter. For example, a patient who consciously wants to overcome their fear of spiders may try everything they consciously can to do it, but will still fail as long as their subconscious mind retains this terror and prevents the patient from succeeding. Progress can only be made be reprogramming the subconscious so that deep-seated instincts and beliefs are abolished or altered. What problems can be treated by hypnotherapy? Hypnotherapy can be applied to many psychological, emotional and physical disorders. It is used to relieve pain in surgery and dentistry and has proved to be of benefit in obstetrics. It can shorten the delivery stage of labour and reduce the need for painkillers. It can ease the suffering of the disabled and those facing terminal illness, and it has been shown to help people to overcome addictions such as smoking and alcoholism, and to help with eating disorders. Children are generally easy to hypnotise and can be helped with nocturnal enuresis (bedwetting) and chronic asthma, whilst teenagers can conquer stammering or blushing problems which can otherwise make their lives miserable. Phobias of all kinds lend themselves well to hypnotherapy, and anyone suffering from panic attacks or obsessive compulsive behaviour, and stress-related problems like insomnia, may benefit. Conditions exacerbated by tension, such as irritable bowel syndrome, psoriasis and eczema, and excessive sweating, respond well, and even tinnitus and clicky jaws (tempero-mandibular joint dysfunction) can be treated by these techniques. General Practice As defined by The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners, General Practice is the provision of primary continuing comprehensive whole-patient medical care to individuals, families and their communities. At Nature Care Wholistic Medical Centre our General Practitioners combine a traditional medical background with wholistic health principles, Integrating complementary therapies such as nutritional support and vitamin therapy into their practice.

  • Homoeopathy

Homoeopathy was founded over 200 years ago by Dr. Samuel Hahnemann, a renowned Physician and Pharmacist. Homoeopathy is a form of natural medicine where the remedies are prepared from plants, minerals and natural sources. Homoeopathic preparations are effective in assisting the body's natural immunity to fight infections, allergies and other functional disorders. There are no known adverse effects. After taking Homoeopathic remedies for specific complaints, patients also feel better generally. This is because, the remedies stimulate the body's defence mechanisms and aid in the well being of the individual emotionally and physically. Homoeopathy has beneficial long-term effects, increasing vitality, giving a tremendous sense of wellbeing and can effectively treat acute or chronic complaints safely.

    • Naturopathy

Naturopathy is a system of natural medicine based on several key beliefs. They are, that the there is great healing power in nature, that the human body contains an innate ability to heal itself if stimulated and supported in the correct way, and that the best way to find optimum health is to view the body wholistically. The wholistic perspective simply means understanding that the physical body and symptoms are but one part of a greater picture also encompassing the mind and the spirit. When you visit a Naturopath they will take a thorough case history, (including family history), asking questions about diet, lifestyle, stress and environmental factors. Most Naturopaths will use a variety of different techniques such as nutrition, herbal medicine and homeopathy. You may be asked to make certain lifestyle changes such as adjusting sleeping, eating and exercise habits and routines. Although Naturopaths can certainly treat both acute and chronic health conditions, the emphasis is on disease prevention rather than cure.

NLP and self-help Everyone has all the resources they need to make positive changes in their life, NLP techniques are used as a tool to facilitate these changes, leaving you to concentrate on what you are thinking, feeling and any other sensory observations. New patterns of behaviour are established and the NLP techniques learned can be used in other situations. So YOU become your own expert. This reduces the potential for reliance on the trained therapist which can be the case with other therapies. NLP Therapy can be content free NLP Therapy can also be content free. This means the therapist can be effective without knowing about the problem in great detail. Clearly this is a major advantage of NLP over traditional therapies as people seeking therapy may be embarrassed about the idea of discussing personal issues one to one with a stranger. The very nature of NLP removes this hindrance. NLP Therapy can be fast As well as being content free, experience shows that NLP Therapy also tends to be fast, typically resolving issues in several brief sessions, which will of course make it very cost effective and much cheaper than traditional therapies. Emotional problems NLP techniques provide new ways of dealing with emotional problems such as low self esteem, anxiety, lack of confidence, destructive relationship patterns, and are successful in effective bereavement counselling. Fears and Phobias Phobias such as spiders, heights, dogs, escalators, water, lifts/elevators, etc can be overcome as there are many NLP phobia cures available depending on the subject and your personal circumstances. The same phobia cures are successfully used on fears, such as fear of failure, fear of public speaking, fear of examinations and fear of driving. Increased performance NLP can help improve performance, so making a good performance excellent and also improving the consistency of performance. It feels good to do well, and it feels VERY good to do well all the time. People perform at all levels, from the person who views golf as a hobby to the professional athlete. We all enjoy that feeling of knowing our game has improved, and for some high achievers that improvement is paramount to stay ahead. Achieving and maintaining good performance is essential at all levels including work and personal relationships. Performance is often judged by others. Having the clarity to notice this and listen to what others are telling you is an asset. NLP can help develop the skills needed for relationships that stay ahead. Stress reduction and weight control for a healthier lifestyle NLP has been successfully used with weight reduction and many other healthier lifestyle choices. There are clearly physical benefits from a One to One NLP session in coping with stress. When we struggle with problems we feel the effects of stress, especially when the problems are longstanding. Addressing the problem reduces the level of stress so therefore not only do we feel better emotionally, we feel physically better too. Where does NLP fit into traditional psychology? NLP is becoming increasing mainstream thanks in part to the television series of Derren Brown and Paul Mckenna. NLP has been described as the next generation of psychology. Traditional Freudian psychology and psychotherapy requires a large commitment of time as the client tries to uncover unconscious processes which determine conscious behaviour. Counselling is a shorter process, usually undirected by the counsellor who facilitates the client to explore feelings and behaviour around a specific issue such a bereavement. Cognitive behavioural therapy is task centred work which identifies a problem behaviour and how the mind thinks about it, and therefore behaves in regard to it. Cognitive behaviour therapy then aims to alter those beliefs and thought processes, so influencing the behaviour towards a positive state for the client. NLP has its roots in the field of behavioural science, developed by Pavlov, Skinner and Thorndike. It uses physiology and the unconscious mind to change thought processes and therefore behaviour.

    • Osteopathy

Osteopathy is a form of manual healthcare which recognises the important link between the structure of the body and the way it functions. Osteopaths focus on how the skeleton, joints, muscles, nerves, circulation, connective tissue and internal organs function as a holistic unit. Using skilled evaluation, diagnosis and a wide range of hands-on techniques, osteopaths can identify important types of dysfunction in your body. Osteopathic treatment uses techniques such as stretching and massage for general treatment of the soft tissues (muscles, tendons and ligaments) along with mobilisation of specific joints and soft tissues. In Australia, osteopaths are government registered practitioners who complete a minimum of five years' university training in anatomy, physiology, pathology, general medical diagnosis and osteopathic techniques. Osteopaths are primary healthcare practitioners and are trained to recognise conditions that require medical referral. They are also trained to perform standard medical examinations of the musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, respiratory and nervous systems. Osteopathy is covered by most private health funds and by Medicare's Chronic Disease Management (CDM) Plans. Osteopaths are registered providers for DVA patients, as well as by workers’ compensation schemes and motor accident insurers. Dr Narelle Manwaring, Debra El-Tawansi

    • Remedial Massage

Remedial massage is a form of body work used to treat specific areas of muscle tension caused by stess or injury. It will increase the flow of blood to injured tissue, therefore speeding up the repair process, allowing toxins in the muscles to be removed and cell health to be improved. Remedial massage is also great for general aches and pains, joint mobilisation, postural imbalances and is wonderful for relaxation and stress relief. Therapists may use compression or effleurage techniques, passive stretching or passive shortening, or a combination of these. One of the basic principles of massage is that each area of the body affects the other, as a result of this belief most massage therapists prefer to do a full body treatment with good quality natural oils.
